Sometimes, when you've been teaching martial arts for more than 20 years, you come across an old picture that makes you stop for a moment.
That's exactly what happened when I looked at these two pictures of Oliver Bloxom.
The first was taken back in the spring of 2017.
Oliver was just a young boy when he started training with me. Like many children who walk through our doors, he wasn't there because he dreamed of becoming a martial arts instructor.
He started because he was dealing with bullying.
His family wanted him to become more confident, learn how to stand up for himself, and develop the skills to stay safe.
Fast-forward to today.
That same little boy is now a Level 3 instructor at Reveal Martial Arts, teaching classes every day and helping other children develop the very skills he once came here to learn.
And to me, that's what makes this story so special.
Every Child Walks Through Our Doors for a Reason
Over the years, I've met thousands of children and parents.
Some kids are naturally outgoing. Others are shy and barely want to make eye contact.
Some have endless energy. Others struggle with confidence, making friends, or speaking up for themselves.
And sometimes, a parent comes to us because their child is having a difficult time at school.
Bullying can be especially hard on children.
It can affect how they feel about themselves, their friendships, and even how much they look forward to going to school.
As parents, we want to protect our children from everything.
But we also know we can't be standing next to them every moment of the day.
That's one of the reasons martial arts can be such a valuable part of a child's development.
We can't promise that a child will never encounter a bully.
But we can help them become stronger, more confident, more aware of their surroundings, and better prepared to handle difficult situations.
That's where Oliver's journey began.
Confidence Doesn't Happen Overnight
One thing I've learned from teaching martial arts is that real confidence takes time.
We can't simply tell a child to be confident and expect everything to change.
Confidence comes from experience.
It comes from learning something difficult and finally getting it right.
It comes from standing in front of classmates and speaking with a clear voice.
It comes from pushing through a challenging workout.
It comes from learning how to defend yourself and realizing that you're capable of more than you thought.
That's why we focus on small accomplishments that build on one another.
One class becomes ten.
Ten classes become a hundred.
A white belt becomes a yellow belt.
Then another belt.
And another.
Eventually, something begins to change.
Not just the color of the belt.
The child wearing it.
Oliver stayed with his training, continued learning, and kept growing.
And over the years, I had the opportunity to watch that growth firsthand.
Learning to Defend Yourself Is Only Part of the Lesson
When parents bring their children to Reveal Martial Arts because of bullying, they naturally want their kids to learn self-defense.
And they should.
Knowing how to protect yourself is important.
But I believe there's something equally important that needs to come with those physical skills.
Good judgment.
Our students learn that being capable of defending yourself doesn't mean you should be looking for a fight.
We teach them to recognize trouble, use their voices, establish boundaries, walk away when possible, and get help from trusted adults.
And when physical self-defense becomes necessary, the goal is to protect yourself and get to safety.
That's why our martial arts training goes hand in hand with the six tenets we teach:
Courtesy. Integrity. Perseverance. Self-Control. Indomitable Spirit. Teamwork.
We want our students to become strong.
But we also want them to become good people.
Because knowing what you can do and understanding what you should do are two very different things.
From Student to Leader
One of my favorite things about martial arts is watching students reach a point where they no longer think only about their own progress.
They start noticing the students around them.
They help someone who is struggling with a technique.
They encourage a younger student who feels nervous.
They become role models.
And sometimes, they discover that they love teaching.
That's what makes Oliver's story so meaningful.
The young boy who originally came to martial arts because he needed help dealing with bullying is now the person helping other children become stronger and more confident.
Today, Oliver is a Level 3 instructor at Reveal Martial Arts.
He teaches classes daily, works with students, and helps carry forward the values he's learned throughout his own training.
Think about that for a moment.
A child who once needed someone to help him find his confidence is now helping other children find theirs.
That's something I'm incredibly proud of.
What Makes a Great Martial Arts Instructor?
People sometimes assume that being a good martial arts instructor is mostly about being able to kick high, perform difficult techniques, or demonstrate impressive self-defense skills.
Those abilities matter only somewhat.
Teaching children requires much more.
It requires patience.
Communication.
Leadership.
Responsibility.
And the ability to recognize that every child is different.
Some students need encouragement.
Some need to be challenged.
Some need someone to believe in them before they fully believe in themselves.
At Reveal, our Leadership and Instructor Programs are designed to help students develop those qualities alongside their martial arts skills.
We teach students to Stand Tall, Make Eye Contact, and Speak with a Clear Voice.
We give them opportunities to lead, communicate, and take responsibility.
And when they're ready, we help them learn how to guide others.
Oliver's journey is a wonderful example of how far that development can go.
Sometimes the Biggest Changes Take Years to See
As parents, we naturally want to see results quickly.
We want our children to become more confident.
We want them to make friends.
We want them to stand up for themselves.
And we want to know that the time and effort we're investing are making a difference.
I understand that completely.
But after all these years of teaching, I've come to appreciate something about martial arts.
Some of the most important results aren't visible after the first few weeks.
They're visible years later.
When a shy child becomes a confident teenager.
When a student who once struggled to speak in front of others starts leading a class.
When someone who used to doubt themselves becomes the person encouraging others.
When a child who came to us because of bullying grows up to help other children learn how to stay safe.
That's the kind of transformation that means the most to me.
What Does It Really Mean to Reveal Your Champion?
Our motto at Reveal Martial Arts is simple:
Reveal Your Champion.
But being a champion doesn't always mean winning a tournament.
It doesn't necessarily mean earning a trophy or becoming the best competitor in the room.
Sometimes being a champion means overcoming something that once seemed impossible.
Sometimes it means finding the courage to speak up.
Sometimes it means refusing to give up when things get difficult.
And sometimes, it means becoming strong enough to help someone else.
When I look at Oliver's pictures from 2017 and today, that's what I see.
I don't just see a young student who grew up and earned a black belt.
I see someone who continued showing up, kept learning, and eventually became a leader.
He didn't just reveal the champion within himself. He's now helping other kids reveal theirs.
To the Parents Who Are Just Beginning This Journey
If your child is struggling with confidence, dealing with bullying, or having a difficult time fitting in, I want you to know something.
The way things are today doesn't have to be the way they stay.
Children grow.
They learn.
They change.
And sometimes, with the right environment, encouragement, and consistent training, they surprise us with what they become capable of doing.
Not every child will become a martial arts instructor.
That's not our goal.
Our goal is to help every student become a stronger, more confident, more capable version of themselves.
For one child, that might mean finally having the courage to raise their hand in school.
For another, it might mean making their first real friend.
For someone else, it might mean learning how to stand up for themselves without becoming aggressive.
And for a student like Oliver, it might mean coming full circle and helping the next generation.
Thank You, Oliver
Oliver, I've known you since you were a little boy.
I've watched you train, learn, grow, and become the instructor you are today.
And now I get to watch you pass those lessons on to other children.
That's a pretty special thing.
I'm proud of the martial artist you've become.
But even more than that, I'm proud of the person you've become.
Thank you for being part of the Reveal Martial Arts family and for helping our students discover their own potential.
Keep revealing your champion, and keep helping others reveal theirs.
